Light

Oh look the woman said, she didn't get your colour
Did I not tell you? She'd end up looking like her father!
Mother sighed, dark, fair, light, does it really matter?
Of course it does, now who is going to marry her

Colour was a big thing. The fairer you are, your chances of success especially marriage was higher. Like that was the ultimate thing. Like women were born for one thing, and one thing only. To be good wife materiel.

Many things have changed, but skin colour seems to still be a concern or at least a comment. It is okay for the man to be dark, but heaven forbid if the woman is dark.

So much so, it's a lucrative business. Use this cream, use that lotion and you will be fairer in 2 weeks. The man of your dreams, who never looked at you before, will run after you with a bouquet of flowers after. During pregnancy, eat the right food so the baby will be born fair. Saffron and Rose Petals in Milk is on the list.

Many, many moons ago, I was shortlisted for a cigarette commercial. This is back in the day when they were allowed on TV and the cinema. As we all know, make-up and lighting can do wonders, and so they were expecting someone who could carry the clean, fresh look of the brand. The irony right? The stick that kills wanted someone who looked refreshing. When they saw me, even before the Hello, came "Oh, you looked fairer in your picture." No prizes for guessing that I didn't get the job.

You'd think in this day and age, colour would just be a word to describe and not one to define. Not quite. It's not as prevalent, but hey check the pharmacy counters and you will find that cream that makes you beautifulfairer. Sun Block is used religiously. We even have arm socks for driving. And of course, the faithful umbrella.

Oh, and if you think this is only amongst the Indians in the country because of the many shades we come in, I have actually heard it mentioned even amongst the Chinese. Yes, we all want to be white 😉

In case you are wondering, yes that is the picture that got me shortlisted.

wow, so crazy to hear about! I'm from Scandinavia, where quite the opposite is appreciated! Pale Danes RUN inot the first rays of sun in the summer, just to get a bit of tan!
But it's probably true that the ideal is still a blond, lightly tanned white person, even here.
Personally I think dark skin is so beautiful! ALL colors are beautiful, I hate that there is a standard way that is considered better to look than others!
But anyway, not too bad you didnt get the cigarette commercial job! I wouldn't be proud to be a face of that.
as a last note, you do look incredibly beautiful, especially if you are less fair than the picture! :D

It's just the way it has always been, it's a mindset
Yeah, no regrets about not getting that cigarette commercial job
Thank you for your kind words... make-up and lighting and yes I am definitely darker than that picture 😊

I agree with @frejafri that all colors are beautiful. When I lived in Indonesia, I saw many women use whitening cream to make their faces lighter. I felt that the unnatural look that they forced on themselves is what was unattractive - not the color of their skin.

In the US and the west, many women want darker skin. In Asia, the opposite is true. I am amazed (and saddened) that we are not content with how we are created.

Great post!

It's conditioning...
And the gullible who fall for it
It took me some time to come to terms especially since it was messing with my rice bowl
But now I know better 😊
Thank you @sumatranate

I like you the way you are because of your bubbly personality. It was a shame you didn't get the ad but then again shame on the colour discrimination they had. Aargh!

This actually reminds me of a brand in our country, "Fair and Lovely"? That's bad copy writing right there. Who says we have to be fair to be lovely?

Those who are too fair, they say they are too pale and look like dying. I guess we just have to learn to not focus on the colours of our skin but what is underneath. After all, they fade away one day.

Yes, beauty is skin deep
But when you are young, you get sucked in
And for the advertisers it is all about marketing
Messed up but it is what it is
So, the more informed/enlightened ones will teach their children different 😊
And you always have such nice things to say .. thank you @happycrazycon

To tell you the truth, this is by far the most thought provoking post I've read today, it's common too in Nigeria, and the result is horrible, you guys are still fair over there, so a whitening cream wouldn't make that heavy changes, more like a black person who is bleaching heavily, there knuckle are black while the remaining body is fair, a horrible mixture of color.

Wow, that does sound bad.
I don't think I've seen anyone who's bleached their skin in person.
I suddenly thought of one King of Pop, who was so talented and who had so much going for him and yet...
I guess if all our lives we are told that a certain look is the best, and then you are presented with ways to achieve it ... it's almost an obvious choice
Sad :(

Thank you @botefarm
Hopefully in time people will gravitate towards what really matters, and be comfortable in their own skin

In the west dark skinned woman are sought after, but it seems in the east it is the light skinned women that are held in esteem

It is true, but even then maybe there are still some prejudices in the west..

What did they want? A ghost? You were beautiful! I hope this thought is a thing of the past.
