Partly Hugh is right dead does not need to stink, neither do people who are seriously ill and dying... there can be a sweet smell around them.
You are right too... the slightest bit of truth makes a story real/believable

The walking dead don't need to stink; depending on when they were re-risen and how long they had been buried for, they could simply be skeletons. :)
