The old timer leaned back in his chair so far it balanced precariously on two legs. He waited.
Jackson looked at the pile of gold dust in the center of the table. The crinkled wax paper beneath it looked like it could blow away, but the weight of that gold was something awfully tempting.
"Your Stetson against my gold." said the old-timer. The crowd hushed. Jackson felt his new fancy cap. It was a fine value. That gold was worth far more, but ... could the old timer really be that cocky? This was status on the line more than wealth. Jackson didn't give a good god damn what these folks thought of him. Tomorrow. Tomorrow could come.
GOD DAMN it. Gotta explain it all.
"I'd sell my cap to you, mister, for that pile of gold." The hush went out of this room. Each eye labeled him a coward. The old timer had won without risk.
"No, son. Hat like that you gotta earn it. I think some fella's gonna take it from you now." The old-timer looked genuinely sorry. "I'll buy you a drink, kid, if you fold properly, but then you'd best be on your way."
A good old fashioned Western standoff. Fine work.

That just goes to prove, it's not the hat that makes the man it's what's under the hat that counts.
That's the idea... or rather, in this context, the outdated idea. I'm not sure suggesting that making a poker bet is 'brave' but to these folks it was.

No, it's only "Italenglish", my fault. In Italy we say "gelare qualcuno" (to freeze someone) or "fare una doccia fredda a qualcuno" (to give a cold shower to someone) when one person give another a short answer that make the second person lose all the boldness and feel insecure
