"Scout out the block ahead," said 7 year old Margarethe to her older brother, Jasper, a 9 year old who acted like a 14 year old.
Margarethe was, in every way, a leader. She had the foresight of a leader, the compassion, the keen eyes and empathetic heart of a leader. She gripped her crutches with casual grace, and whipped them out to stop the ball from rolling away.
"GO." She insisted, with an all caps tone that managed to be barely audible, lest their quarry hear her.
Jasper tumbled away. He tumbled everywhere he went. His 14 year old demeanor was not the only think about him that seemed 14. He was also as gangly and uncomfortable in his body as anyone who had been through a growth spurt would be, even though he hadn't had a puberty-brought-on growth spurt yet. He was, after all, only 9. Still, he tumbled away with a purpose.
Maragrethe glared at the ball. It had been a distraction from the moment their adventure began.
I appreciate getting to know characters in such an expeditious manner, especially souls such as these which I now wish to learn more about.
Gotta get it out so we can get on with the story... and then the time is done.
That was surprisingly...compact? I'm not sure, but it was oddly easy to follow, you're usually a tumble of words, aren't you, @improv?
But still, a delightful read. You're very good ;)
