No one is above the law, he said. Then he winked at her like she should know.

She should know. She isn't above the law and has no reason to think anyone else is... This it ocurred to her that his wink meant that he thought some people WERE above the law, but that he wasn't allowed to say it, and that she would agree with him. She didn't. She didn't at all.
Sarah was a law abiding ghoul. She followed her heart and her mind and she never ever did what her heart and mind told her not to. And they always agreed with the law. That was one of the advantages of being in love with the person who made the laws. And he wasn't above the law, he was the law, so he could change the law. I guess the only time he might violate a law was if he decided on purpose that he wasn't going to exclude himself from a law. And he'd done that once or twice. He suffered the consequences of breaking his own law. Of course the times that the law would have had him put to death he changed the law. He wasn't crazy or masochistic or had a death wish. But when the law that he had made made him, for example, withstand 40 lashes, he took it heroically. That wasn't WHY she loved him, of course. She loved him because he gave her his blood. But it didn't hurt that he was easy to love.
40 lashes to Victor, and here was this common soldier suggesting that Victor thought himself above the law.
The doors slid open soundlessly, revealing the complete and utter chaos that I had been sent to fix.
The soldier droned on. It would have been long past time to abandon this if it were merely a bad date with a hypo critical exaggerator with too many poems in his head making him talk like a teen on GOTH WATCH. But it wasn't just a bad date.
He was prone to hyperbole, true, but he also seemed like the kind of guy who would need to prove himself on occasion, and he'd been hinting at a desire to supplant Victor in pubs for the past 30 years. This little weasel of a neonate had smartly kept a low profile the first 20 years, surviving and finding a niche for himself in the Lancea Sanctum's little army. But after he held an official position, he started spouting this nonsense about doing a better job than the prince. He presumably thought the LS would protect him from the whims of the most powerful elder in Los Angeles. She had to find out if he was just a squirt and could be abided, or if he had somehow gotten explicit permission from the LS to do this sort of nonsense. That would imply some sort of ploy on the part of the actual elders... maybe he'd serve as a distraction, or maybe they'd do away with him themselves as a public show of support for Victor while something else went through.
She showed him she was interested by eating a little piece of bread off of his plate, without commenting that he didn't need to go through this absurdity with her. She wasn't going to call him out for not ordering when they both knew he couldn't eat anyways.
The dog barked loudly at them both as the strolled towards his place. His "place" was, of course, just one of the many minor havens his sire kept, and which he had been allowed to decorate himself. But ...was she expected to know that? Who knows? Did it matter? Suddenly, she felt wary of the law again. If he invited her into his domain, was she then under his power?... Oof. Victor hadn't gone into details, leaving them up to her, trusting her to be clever and seductive... maybe she should bring him to her place? But then he'd know where she lived. And she couldn't call on any of her powers lest he know who she was. Was he unscrupulous? She'd not heard of him murdering his prey nor of any breaches of the Masquerade.
UGH. Maybe some neutral location would be best. Yes. Have him take her to a sexy spa or something... Not or something. Exactly that. She had an idea... it involved taking a pill that would let down his guard after he drank her blood. She had the antidote on her, too. She'd just have to be careful not to spill any of her own beans before he bit her.

Her heart and head always went with the LAW? Wow :) Also, liked the bit about teen goth watch :)
Well, that's what happens when you're in love with the law.
Blood drinking is part of following the law - interesting :)
