Her umbrella shop was closed, and she sat in the back office, calculating the costs of changing to a parasol shop.

Marianne had an advanced accounting degree, but there were too many unknowns.

The one, most incalculable, was - she loved umbrellas. Were parasols similar enough that she would love them, too?

There's a lace parasol that inspired the thought. It would never hold up under a heavy rain, and it wasn't designed to, but the shadows it cast in the hot sun were... perfect. They kept you safe from the sun's rays, but still let you enjoy the sun. And it kept reminding her of a kaleidoscope. The shadows were sharp and sometimes not. They got to shady... it was beautiful.

She wanted it, but she couldn't let herself feel okay bout buying it if she was an umbrella lady.

In comes (in came) an idea.

What if it were an umbrella and parasol business? Then the costs were a little more predictable. There was signage and inventory and marketing to change. There were some staff training differences, and she'd pay for that, but... but... but...

Her she was, in SoCal... it really didn't rain that often. Most of her umbrellas were just for beauty and display. Maybe if it were parasols, they'd be form and function.
