She loved both her husbands.

She couldn't tell them apart, but she loved them in different ways. She loved her left husband with the left side of her body, and her right husband with the right side. They didn't even know she had two of them, but how would they have? Her system was perfect. And because she always did the same kind of thing with both of them, and she had made sure to find two husbands who had the same name, there was no problem. She had face blindness and they both knew that, so any quirks of her behaviour that they would otherwise have questioned was just attributed to that... and/or that she was French. Because Lilie was French. So she got away with a lot. But there wasn't even that much to get away with. Both of her husbands made enough money that she didn't even really need to have an income, so instead she went to work, but her work was something very French, like Photography. Yes. Her job was "Photography". SO there was no one really to put the lie to her. She would "travel". She would take very generic pictures wherever she was with an old film camera... so there was no data to pull from it. She never made any money at it. Neither of her husbands expected her to.

There was a feeling about the place, but it wasn't what you'd expect. She was on a plane between the husbands, and this plane had a funny aura about it. Like... it felt familiar... too familiar. She lived her life without too much familiarity. That was why she had two husbands. That way she could always be in an earlier stage of the relationship. That way, there was still a long ways to go... but this felt ... like wholeness. It was discomfiting. and discomforting and also very comfortable... Oh God. OH GOD. There he was, walking back from the front of the plane, probably. Remember, she has face blindness. But she put together the clues and the smile on his face... this was one of her husbands... happenstance? No. He hadn't been planning a trip... Oh god... There was an empty seat next to her. She should have known this was TOO LUCKY.

"Surprise! Beloved Lilie, I've been wanting to travel with you. I know you're working this weekend, and I promise I won't interrupt you too much, but you have to have dinners every night, right? And you have to sleep. I want to sleep next to you and feed you whatever it is that they eat in Milwaukee. I hope you'll forgive me for pr

The stamp on the envelope...
She cried when she looked at it. They had both, independently of each other, been on that plane. They had both wanted to surprise her. The left husband, as we saw, because he wanted to travel with her. The right husband because he had planned a big welcome home party with all of the photography-world contacts he had been secretly meeting with and talking up her photography to. Secrets are bad things, but even worse when you can't be mad at someone for keeping secrets because you've been lying to them, and their secret was with the best of intentions.

They both revealed that they would have been okay with the relationship being open if she'd only been honest with them. In fact, they became very good friends, but the lying was an issue neither of them could get past, and so, her perfect life crumbled. She divorced both of them. Then was taken to prison for a few years because polygamy is illegal. Which isn't really fair, she thought. She wasn't really polygamous. She was just the same person twice, and they were the same person twice. But there were tax implications, and that was what really got her in trouble. If only the men had married each other.
