Iris

Irises grow on her grave. She isn't dead yet, but she's planted them in anticipation of the day. She wants to make all kinds of nice things in preparation for that day, so she won't be sad about it coming, but instead excited for people to see all the nice things she's done. She wants to be proud of her death like she was proud of her wedding.

She has made several short films, all beautiful and artsy that only she and her cinematographer husband have seen footage from, and he hasn't even gotten to see the edits. She's made them all secretly. They'll be released when she dies. She's also written a number of poems and has the outline for a whole series of novels.

One blessing of this means of creation is that she'll never be around to have to worry about HOW to get them published. That's the least fun part of creative endeavours.

She also won't be able to edit them, but she trusts whoever inherits the rights to them will be able to figure out how to do it best. There are outlines, and plenty of words written in her voice... ultimately, it doesn't matter what happens with them. She'll be dead, and she can imagine that whatever she wants to happen with them will happen.

She's been doing this for years. She has no expectation of death's close approach, she just keeps fear at bay.

That reminds me of the people I knew back home who were tending graves every Sunday and knowing that they end up there....

That's a way to hope, at least, one's memory will live on. Do you remember a documentary, or maybe it was just a gallery display, that came out a couple years ago? Someone found photos by a woman who hadn't really been known by anyone in her life, but there were hundreds or maybe thousands of photos she took, and they were put on display. I'd rather be known in life, though.
