Hot Tamale

Better than a cold tamale, I guess. We, Stina and I, just gave away some of Dad’s books to a friend. I named books that dad had read to me as bedtime books mostly, and he took them. I hope he’ll keep them safe and special. I should try to remember these books. Oh, there was one about a town that was built on land revealed after a river moved, so the land hadn’t been claimed, and these folks used the old law about who got land to develop it and own it. And then the main character, who was naive, became mayor, and the only law was “don’t do things you shouldn’t do.” or something like that. And someone tried running a casino on the land, and because of his naivete and utter guilelessness, he accidentally outwitted them. They banked on human greed, and he wasn’t subject to that. But he also, oh, it doesn’t matter.

Another maybe was “If Life is a bowl of cherries, why am I always in the pits” but Erma Bombeck. At least I think it was. Maybe I read that on my own?

After we finished a book, I’d get to go down to his office and choose the next book to get read. That was very exciting. I could pick anything, and ultimately, it was always fascinating. I never picked a dud, and I wonder now if that was because anything my dad was reading to me was immediately fascinating because he was reading it to me. I wonder if I could have made it through History of the Russian Revolution or Moby Dick if I were reading it to myself. Because we could stop, too, anytime I wanted, and talk about what we were reading. I ...miss that. I wish. I hope I can do that, too. Oh, man.

Maybe Stina and I can read things to each other… not that Stina can replace my dad, but that’s such a special thing to be able to do.
