Oh, the masks we wear.

Queeneth wore both literal and figurative masks. Her face was always concealed, but more importantly, she behaved as if she knew the whats the whys the whos even though she had no confidence in her own knowings.

But this was the way of a dark elf hiding among elves. Her own people had forgotten about her, she was sure, but ... she was never sure. She knew nothing. She was wracked with insecurity and doubt, but all who crossed her path believed her to be powerful, sure, devastating.

She wielded nothing more than the suggestion of disapproval on her impassive face, and they went to great lengths to please her. They didn't even know how, but they tried everything, and their creativity knew no bounds.

At last, one day, they unearthed a little boy, buried as sustenance for the heart trees of Small Woods, which spanned the continent, and was only small compared to the large woods, which encompassed the world. The Small Woods at least had borders.

The little boy's heart had been gone for quite some time, but it was still quite a sight to see this empty-chested child presented to her like an offering.

She flicked a finger. She didn't even know if her moribund morbidity was a trait that she possessed or if it was only the result of these little nothing creatures making assumptions. It didn't matter. With that flick of her finger, mana poured into her. Residue from this boy's sacrifice. Not so much as the tree had gotten, but something. Something.

I am darkness.

She thought. And the darkness became her mask.
