Herbs (5-minute Freewrite)
I grew up drinking Chinese herbal soup everyday especially those basic chicken soup with herbs. Some may not like the herbs' taste as they can be too bitter but ironically I love it since young. The more bitter the better (hence I love bitter gourd too!).
The most basic Chinese herbs that are used by my mum for soups are dried red dates, wolfberry, Chinese yam and Solomon's seal. There are many more although I can't name all. Those that I know of are ginger, ginseng, dried lily bulb, lotus seed, black fungus, snow fungus, gingko nuts and Chinese almonds. The list can go on.
Basically, the herbs are derived from plants' flowers, seeds, barks and roots. There are alot of medicinal values in herbs, mostly are used to maintain the balance of the whole body's mechanism and to boost immune system.
I cannot forget my one-month confinement experience after child labour, where Chinese people believe women have to be confined at home to rest for one month and with daily consumption of herbs to aid in healing and improve mummy's health. Plus we can't wash our hair for one month too to avoid entrance of wind into our body which will jeapordise our health and ligament. I love the herbal soups everyday but not the oily hair. Good thing we still can shower our body but with ginger water.
Later on in my life, I learned from my husband other herbs too. I am more into Chinese food and he loves western food which incorporates alot of basil, rosemary, mint, peppermint, oregano, thyme, dill, cayenne, cinnamon and sage. He will be able to write more on these if he is doing this freewrite.
I totally love herbs; be it Chinese herbs or Western herbs. To me, they are amazing herbs - natural and God-given. I just saw peppermint plant today while I walked around the town with my parents. One peppermint leaf and it saves my whole bag - it smells so nice with that minty aroma.

That one month confinement thing sounds heavenly, especially with all the yummy herbal soups. But I'd go nuts with the oily hair too, @iamjadeline! Nice bit of free writing - I really enjoyed it!
I admit i'm ignorant about the vast majority of Chinese herbs. I wasn't even aware that bitter gourd existed, since here gourds are sweet, almost like pumpkins!

I agree with you! Herbs are the bomb! Helps with flavor and many health benefits, as you said! :)
I have wolfberries growing in my garden and am wondering if the dried red date is jubilee. I have to look up Solomon's seal!
I do think that it is a good idea to rest after having a baby. People here get up and go all over the place right away - I think that leads to lots of problems later.
