Freewrite Prompt: Old Maid

in #freewrite6 years ago

Eleanor was very beautiful. She was the maiden very much sought after by the young men in the town. Everyone knows her for her outstanding beauty and her wit that she carried with her. However, she just never picked anyone though she was of the marrying age.

Why? Everyone wondered. Is there someone she was waiting for? Who would that be?

Not many know this, only her closer friends. There was this guy, Ethan who was attached the time they knew each other. She went behind his girlfriend's back to see him and also she had high hopes they would be together eventually. She waited and waited.

Finally, Ethan broke up with his girlfriend. No one knew exactly what the reason was. Maybe the girlfriend knew he was a player and couldn't settle for that. Eleanor was thrilled. She thought she would live happily ever after with Ethan, or so she thought. They got together, it was her dream came true. People started whispering behind her back but she didn't care, since she had gotten the man of her dreams. Her friends tried to tell her since he could betray his girlfriend, he could do it with her too. She refused to believe, thinking she was the love of his life and they were meant to be.

However, the good days didn't last. They started fighting and Eleanor had grown to be more and more sarcastic with Ethan, especially after knowing he had close relationships with other girls. She tried her best to be their friends too and tried to understand Ethan, still believing he would return to her side one day and be true to her.

Their love story took a bad turn. He went away suddenly and left her confused. She drowned herself in tears many years. In fact, she had received news than Ethan was already married. She couldn't believe why he could choose another woman when he was actually a player, why he would settle down for her.

During this time, there were several good men seeking her for courtship, one of whom came from the big city too. She was picky and turned them all down. That was already 8 years after her heartbreak incident. It's not that Ethan was thaaat good too. She just finds it hard to move on.

"Please, Eleanor. I want to see you finding your happiness too. I don't want you to be an old maid one day. Maybe you can lower your expectations just a little bit? I think Jesse is quite a nice person. Or Leroy? He came all the here for you. He would have gotten any other girl but he came back to the town to look for you. Promise me you will open up your heart once again? You deserve happiness like I do!" her best friend, Liz said to her on her wedding day as she handed Eleanor her wedding bouquet.

Eleanor teared. Can she? "Maybe being an old maid isn't that bad after all," she silently thought to herself, looking at the wedding bouquet.

Decades later, Liz's grandson came running to her, "Hi, grandma Len! I'm here to visit you!" Eleanor smiled. "Grandma said you could use some company."

Perhaps she was punishing herself for stealing someone else's boyfriend. Perhaps she could not believe she deserve happiness anymore.

Thank you @saracampero. Hugs and blessings to your side 💖

So the boy now has two grandma right? That is not bad after all. Hehe :)

Hahah yes they make sure they visit Eleanor enough to let her feel she has a family in her old age.

Splendid writing. Was really hoping for a happy ending but that’s for fairytales. Real life is never that perfect huh...

Hahah yeah. Sometimes I alternate my endings :P trying to strike a balance perhaps. Thank you @ireenchew :)

Reminds me of Once Upon A Time, an interesting seven seasons ABC television show which ended this year, 2018, which was about fairy tales being merged with the real world and other realms.

Haha I know that series though I haven't follow any yet. Thank you @joeyarnoldvn for coming by :)

Sometimes the one that got away, needs to be kept that way

But on the bright side she had the kids and then the grandkids through her friend, one of the biggest reasons one gets married... so kinda worked out :)
