5 Minute Freewrite Day 374: Sunflower Seeds

Things haven’t been going well for Chris and his newly formed family recently. He, a trueborn farmer hadn’t been able to get a decent job after moving to the city for his baby’s medical treatment.

Something good was the fact that the medicines seemed to be working, but his bank account was quickly drying, not having being very full to begin with even after selling almost everything back home. It seemed that good news needed to bring something ill with themselves, like his grandma used to say “equivalent exchange son!”.

As such, he didn’t know what to do. Sure, something simple like cashier in some food place or concierge in some school could help, but what if not?, nothing else came to mind, he knew he couldn’t apply for much after not finishing highschool, and he wouldn’t have cared if it wasn’t for his love and their small bundle of joy.

A sigh escaped his lips that morning when he was looking outside and saw the mailman delivering something. Curious about it, he went there and opened the mailbox. Inside, a small package, covered in a note with a messy handwriting he knew well.

"Things may get hard, but life itself is hard and we enjoy it anyways. Take this and eat them or plant them, just be sure to remember those days when we played together in the fields of sunflowers. We weren`t rich, but we were happy.

With love, grandma."

Inside the package was a small bag with sunflower seeds. A tear escaped from his left eyes, and Chris smiled.
