Freewrite - Books

Books? I love books! I love the smell of books. I love the feel of books! I love to read books! My name is Diane Macdonald and I am a bookaholic!

I remember vividly receiving one of my very first books when I was two years old. My Dad had returned from a trip with a book of fairy tales in his suitcase. The book was humongous - at least to the eyes of a two year old. It filled the entire bottom of his suitcase! Over the years I read the Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, the Heidi books and many many more. I went to bed at night with a flashlight under the covers to read, so that my parents would think I was asleep.

In my teen years disaster happened! My Mom found a copy of Peyton Place under the bed. As I had borrowed it from the library, I was banned from using the library for a month. That was pain and torture for such a bookworm as I!

In my young adulthood after college, I went back to reading all the beloved classics that had been mere assignments at school – Emma, Wuthering Heights, Lorna Doone, Paradise Lost, A Scots Quair, Les Misérables etc. Then I found Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, which became my favorite book of all times. No book I have read since has held me under its spell in such a profound way. I did read a lot of books by Rosamunde Pilcher, a British writer who wrote women's books. I loved her style of writing. To me it was like art made from words.

Nowadays I have to admit that I read books on my Kindle Fire, and my favorites now are historical fiction books set during WWII.

I have come full circle. I don't need a flashlight under the covers anymore, but I still read until the wee small hours while my husband sleeps with a sleep mask!

Oh, we have a lot in common - starting with reading under the covers (maybe that is why I needed glasses early in life) to falling in love with Rebecca (I was 16 and have read all of Daphne du Maurier's books) and love Rosamund Pilcher.
My eyes are tired at night and I do a lot of audiobook reading these days. :)

Amazing, eh? I didn't need reading glasses till after I hit 60 though! Thanks fort he prompte. I have done it already, so need to drop you the link. This is fun!

Thank you for sharing your reading life story. It's always interesting to learn other people's history. I'm on Kindle now too, for reading novels :) I still have my special art books and an old library of poetry books.

I am the same, I have special art books and table top books too. The old books in my photograph above dated from the early 1900's. I parted with them this summer, only because I have a 15 year old niece who is crazy about old books, and she is planning on becoming an English teacher. I know she will take good care of them and appreciate them as I have done since I was a child! My Dad found them on a dump of all places, and brought them home for me!
