Sam and Jake had been friends since elementary school and they shared a common goal and purpose in life. That goal was to do nothing, that was it, from the time that they became friends in the first grade they both simply skated by taking the easiest routes possible. They only did what was absolutely necessary to pass each grade, even weaseling into special ed so that the classes would consist of the bare minimum for them to be able to live on their own. They took every sick day possible and as they got older they figured out new and ingenious ways to skip school altogether without getting caught. They applied for and received a disability allowance for low brain function, even though if anyone had really known how much brain power that they were expending in order to do nothing they would both have went to jail for fraud. But no matter if they had, because there Uncle Sam would still be feeding them and taking care of their every need. Neither had ever dated, too much trouble and expense. They never learned how to drive because automobiles and drivers licenses meant responsibilities. They live in the house that Sam's parents Willed to him when they died, and they had conned a caring cousin into taking care of the taxes and Bills for them thinking that they were both too inept to do it for themselves.

Now in their fifties, the boys sat in front of a TV watching old reruns of forgotten shows on the networks that their antenna would pick up. Their checks and food stamps bought them plenty of food and drinks which were delivered straight to their door from the local market. Sam loved his Pabst Blue Ribbon beer by the case, while Jake drank Boones Farm wine from Solo cups. Chips, candy, nuts and ready-made microwave meals were their staples and the hardest job that they had was taking out the trash once every week or two. Which of them was responsible for performing that single chore led to most of their arguments, any others usually were about who received what out of the dwindling food supplies near the end of the month.

It was about midday on the afternoon that it all came to a fiery end. They were watching Captain Kangeroo when the program was interrupted by a special news alert, there had been a massive Earthquake several miles off-shore and a giant tsunami was headed in their direction. Jake changed the channel to "Leave it to Beaver" only to have that program interrupted after a few seconds. The reporter excitedly exclaimed that Yellowstone volcano had erupted and that the ash cloud and debris from that explosion would pass over their area within the hour. Sam angrily shouted for god's sake change the channel man. But the only remaining channel was nothing but a tone, which soon changed to an emergency broadcast report stating that an all-out first strike nuclear attack had been launched against the United States by every nuclear power in the world with the exception of our one remaining friend, Russia. The report went on to tell them to stay tuned for further information in case anyone survived the first attack.

So Jake eyes wide and mouth agape looked over at Sam and asked, do you think that we should do something? Why said Sam, do you think we're due for some change?

You know, I know people who live like that - kind off. Makes me so sad. Oh well, change is a little too late, but then again, that is the kind of people who survive disasters and that is really forcing them to change.
