Day 91: 5 Minute Freewrite: Friday - Prompt: earthquake
"Now all the land animals, the deer and elk, the foxes and minks,
the bear and others had gone inland. Now the water creatures were there.
Now Thunder and Kingfisher and Earthquake looked at the ocean.
“This is enough,” They said. “Now the people will have enough to live on.
Everything that is needed is in water.”
So it is that the prairie became ocean. It is so because Thunder wished it so. It is so because Earthquake wished it so. All kinds of creatures are in the ocean before us because Thunder and Earthquake wished the people to live."
Excerpt: American Indian Folklore
Apistotookii, the creator, revealed in a dream to Wohpekuta that the land would soon be returned to his people and that the time of the white eyes was coming to an end. When great holes begin to open in the earth and thunder is heard without lightening or rain and the white medicine men have no answer for it, then gather as many of the people as will listen in the place that I will show you. In seven cycles of seasons from the first report of a coming great fire in the night sky, a earthquake will roll across the land from the great water in the East to the great water in the West and all that has been built up will be laid low, and that which is under will be turned up. But the land that I will show you shall tremble but not fall, it will move but not turn over. There you will find shelter and from there you will start over, the land will be purged and renewed and restored to the people.
Wohpekuta, who was known more commonly as Sam Whittingham woke from the dream and stared up at the ceiling of his suburban condo in the faint morning light as the first rays of the sun began to peek out over the horizon. If he were to try he could not describe the feeling that filled his heart at this moment, it was as it must have been for his Grandfather who had tried to describe the feeling to him about his own dreams from Apistotookii. Today was Monday and he was expected early at the office for a board meeting with all of the major investor's representatives present, the contracts would be signed and within hours he would be considered a wealthy man. Was it a coincidence that his dream had come now, at this critical time in his life? No, he saw clearly that Apistotookii had opened a way for him to gather the people, and he had provided the funds to prepare them to start over.
Wohpekuta was his Indian name, the name that he received when he became a man. That was the day that his Grandfather, who was called Nitassinan, told him that one day he would be a great chief who would lead his people into a time of great peace in a land at rest. Sam Whittingham got up and headed for the shower, he would continue to live as he had these twelve years since finishing Harvard law school, at least until this deal was completed. There would be plenty of time after that to make his plans and begin the transformation to Wohpekuta, the leader of the New Indian Nation.

**Disclaimer: I often use the freewrite prompt to tell a story instead of doing a pure freewrite, so they sometimes take longer than 5 minutes and usually have some editing. But I try to do my story straight through at one sitting without any unnecessary breaks.
