Day 157: 5 Minute Freewrite: Sunday - Prompt: before midnight

The humans had all left the house except for the one that was always busy working and cleaning, but we mice were not worried about her because she often left us treats on purpose. So the six of us were scrounging around the kitchen floor looking for anything that had been dropped or left for us, we could hear the remaining human sobbing in her room upstairs, we didn't know what was going on today but hearing her crying was not unusual. There was no food around, except for a big pumpkin, but that would take a lot of work to break into and we probably wouldn't get a hole done before the others returned. We were just about to give up when something crazy happened. The girl had stopped crying and we heard voices, suddenly we were outside and... Wilber and James had changed into humans while Loretta, Joyce, Susan and me, I'm Frank, were changed into big black horses. What was really funny was the stupid pumpkin was now a carriage and apparently we were all headed to something called a "Ball!"

The nice human girl who had been crying came out of the house with an older woman that none of us had ever seen before. Man what a change! We had never seen that girl wear anything except what humans would call rags, to us they would have made great beds but we never bothered her stuff because she was so nice to us. Anyway, that older woman told her to be sure to return before midnight when we would be changed back into a pumpkin and mice, then the girl hopped into the pumpkin, I mean carriage, and away we went toward the big castle on the other side of town. Pulling that carriage was cool, but seeing the girls with those long swishy tails and manes and big eyelashes was strangely exciting, I didn't understand at first why it didn't affect Wilber and James in the same way until I realized that they were humans and not really attracted to horses.

Once the girl was inside the castle I swished my tail and neighed to get Wilber's attention. He finally came around to the front and I pawed at the ground and acted like I was eating so that he would get the message. We needed to use this golden opportunity to find some food before we got changed back into mice again. So Wilber and James headed off around the back of the castle toward the service entrance, there was nothing the girls and I could do except wait. Looking at those fillies I did get a few good ideas, but harnessed up like we were I was forced to just enjoy the view.

James found an empty birdhouse on top of a fence post and he yanked it free, then he and Wilber found the refuse bins and started going through them and stuffing the house full through the small openings. They were careful to get something from every food group, we had fruit, berries, nuts, vegetables and a little bit of protein. They even found some pieces of sweet pastries for everyone. Once the little house was full they hurried back to where we were waiting and stowed the birdhouse on top of the carriage..err pumpkin...whatever. They were just in time too because just as they were finishing up and trying to get some jelly from a pastry off of their fingers, out came the girl now barefoot and running towards us with one glass slipper in hand. In a flash, we were racing away toward home.

We have been told that you already know the rest of the story so I won't repeat it here. But I can tell you that when the girl, whom I discovered was named Cinderella, moved into the castle she took all of us with her. The fellas and I married the girls and with Cinderella's help, we turned the former birdhouse into a mouse apartment building where we all live to this day in the castle kitchen eating scraps to our heart's content.
