The Children: 5 Minute Freewrite, Prompt: Children

The children were wide eyed. Mouths agape. They stood stock still and if you didn't know better, you'd almost think they were statues, frozen in time. Their eyes were all focused upwards, staring at the thing before them as though it had them under a spell...

And maybe it did.

Suddenly, it was if the sun shone down, directly for them. Their faces all at once became... light. Happy smiles slowly formed on their faces and an audible sigh of happiness issued forth from them. It sounded like, well, not to sound totally ridiculous, but it sounded like angels singing.

The children, all sizes, shapes, colors and ages stood shoulder to shoulder, still unmoving other than their expressions.

Their eyes widened.

The mouths transforming into big "O"s with a slight intake of breath.

As a group, as if they were one being, their shoulders rocked back slightly and there was a gasp from them, their eyes still pinned on the figure before them.

The light on their faces faded and became dark.

A slight shift in expression.

A confused wrinkle on their brows.

Their mouths all transitioned to almost a frown, a grimace, perhaps.

Stumbling, together, yet separately, they took a step back, then two.

One of the children fell down and issued a cry of pain.

That cry broke the spell and there was chaos.

The fallen child sat on the ground, scrambling backwards, sobbing.

All the children turned in mass chaos and ran. It was madness.
