Donald Killed Sally - Weekend Freewrite 2

in #freewrite7 years ago

"I like hats." That's what Donald said the day before he killed Sally.

"Because they go with your garish shirts?" Johnny asked.

"You're just jealous that I can pull it off." Donald replied. Reaching forward, he snagged a napkin from the dispenser to wipe the chocolate sauce from his chin. "Mister, I spent my 2 paychecks on one suit. Who taught you about money?"

"Can we go now?" The young man asked, exasperated. "You finished your ice cream."

"No. You bring Sally's file?"

"She was your partner for years. How can you take this job?"

The older man looked across the table and into the eyes of his junior. "Wondering about yourself?"

Johnny's eyes broke the gaze. "Anyone would."

"Nothing is simple. Remember that. And getting coffee out of a $200 tie is a bitch."

The brunette sat back. "Shit!" As he rose to scrub the silk, Donald grabbed his wrist.

"Forget the file. Just tell her to meet me at Ralphie's tomorrow night."

She found him in the Terminal Bar and Grill. He was sober for a change.

"Last time you were 6 beers deep and sucking pretzels." Sally remarked wryly, placing her purse on the counter and perching primly on the stool beside Johnny. "Where's Donald?"

"Pretzels are the only safe food at Ralphie's."

Sally wrinkled her nose. "You two are the only ones who call it the Terminal that. It's gross."

Johnny snorted. "It's true. Anything on the menu hits eject on the stomach. That's why Donald's in the can. He ate the chimichanga dip."

Johnny's face was full of confusion. He looked over his shoulder and leaned in towards Sally. " Why are you here? Leave. While you can."

Her face split into a wide smile. "Who do you think is paying?"

"Why would you..."

"I found a boat. And he owes me."

"Did he tell you about the time he caught a flyball?" Sally asked, looking past Johnny's shoulder toward the back of the diner.

"What does that have to do with.."

Sally cut him off, lost in memory. "It was our second year together, before my fall, and our job was to guard this rich boy who liked using Daddy's money to wash his dirty hands. We're at a baseball game, Donald in his loud shirt, when suddenly, he leaps up, stretches over the railing and catches the ball. The crowd went crazy and it was a jumbled mess for a few minutes. When it was over, rich boy was gone."

Johnny stared.

Sally smiled as she stood. "He said the kid wanted him to catch the ball and must've been grabbed when he wasn't looking. But I knew. Donald has a way of getting things done."

"It was nice to see you Johnny. Take care of yourself."

She strode towards the dimly lit restrooms, leaving her purse on the counter.

Johnny never saw her again.
