Yard Sale Date (5-min Freewrite with Prompt: Yard Sale)

in #freewrite6 years ago

Setting up a table by the balcony in the shade given by a large oak tree, Julian checked his phone again. He put it back in his pocket. The girls were placing the banner up on the balcony rails. Margery had tied balloons on the trees, Christina had made lemonade, and Francine had baked cookies. All their old toys were out, the girls now being out of High School. They checked their phones too, texting about boys. Margery looked up to look at her dad.

'I'm sure she'll show up, dad, don't worry.'

Julian checked his watch. The yard sale was Francine's idea. The girls were determined to set their father up with a new lady before either of them moved out so that he wouldn't get lonely. Their mother had passed away several years back. Julian had met a young woman at the supermarket who had caught his eye and made him flutter inside, feelings he'd not felt since his wife had passed. The girls believed it was a sign. The thing was, he hadn't gotten her name. Francine had jumped in and told the lady her dad was doing a yard sale and she should come. She gave the location and a time. Now, Julian was as nervous as he was on the very first date he went on when he was just a young teen.

'Someone's coming!' announced Christina. All three girls smiled.

Julian looked up, and the beautiful woman from the supermarket walked up to their yard. Julian smiled politely, shyly, as the girls pounced on the woman, the same way they had at the supermarket, bombarding her with polite quips, and talking about their single dad and all his best assets.

Finally, Julian mustered the courage and said:

'Would you like to buy anything. I'm sure there's something that can peak your interest.' Julian went to show her around when he heard Francine say:

'Yes, is there anything you'd like to take home with you?' Julian winced internally.

The woman smiled and blushed. She looked at Julian. 'Well, perhaps we can go on a date first, and then I'll see if I want to take you home.'

The girls cheered excitedly, Julian nodded and the woman gave him her name and number on a piece of paper. It looked like she had already written it out for him. Julian looked back at his girls, they gave him a thumbs up and then went back to their phones, as he and his date continued to chat.
