The Invisible Fish: Weekend Freewrite Challenge

Michael sat down in the middle of the road and began to cry. He had failed. Again. And it had cost another person their life. Again. He had been Hunting the monsters and demons of the world since he was big enough to hold a shotgun and he couldn’t seem to stop getting people killed. He had thought about quitting but we all know there’s only one way out of the Hunter life and that’s six feet below.

He was honestly surprised he wasn’t dead yet. He risked his life daily and yet he was never the one to get hurt. He wondered how it was possible to go as long as he had without even coming close to dying except once when he was a kid. He had been in a coma for three weeks and the doctors had been surprised he had woken up at all.

Hunting was not a safe job by any standards and everyone that was in the know about monsters knew it. But he couldn’t seem to stop getting people killed. Even if he purposefully put himself in the line of fire it was as if the bullets would go straight through him.

He got up and walked over to the nearby pond to by the water. A small translucent fish swims up and he felt compelled to feed it for some odd reason. He glanced around and saw a bag of bread sitting on the bench, seemingly abandoned, so he picked it up and start feeding the fish, watching as it jumped out of the water to catch it. He couldn't help but laugh as he continued to feed the invisible fish that someone else wanted to have for his dinner.

He fed the fish for awhile and watched in shock as it started growing… and growing… and growing. Until it was no longer the size of a dollar bill and now it’s the size of a small shark.

He got up and took a few steps back, dropped the bread that spilled into the water and watching as the fish gobbled it up and it started growing yet again, not stopping until it was the size of an adult shark and barely fitting in the small pond anymore.

He quickly glanced around to make sure nobody was around to see this, although it’s not likely since it’s the middle of the night by an abandoned side road. Seeing that no one is around he went back to his duffle that he dropped by the side of the road and grabbed the salt out of it before hurrying back to the pond and pouring some on the shark to see if it is in fact something supernatural.

He gasped and took a few steps back as it let out an awful ear piercing shriek and writhed in the pond, splashing water around.

Suddenly the cashier from the small restaurant down the street comes running over, not even noticing the shark and yelling about the bill he forgot to pay. Michaels eyes widened as he came running up and stood too close to the pond. He tried to warn the man, he really did but he was too slow and the shark lashed out of the water, it’s powerful jaws latching on and making a horrible crunching sound that will forever be seared into Michael's brain. He yelled and grabbed his salt filled shotgun, shooting at the fish and missing as it sinks back down into the water with the man from the restaurant, sliding into the depths of the murky water, never to be seen again.
