What Is Sexuality

This week begins an exploration of sexuality and how freedom is very important to a very basic human need. We might wonder what is sexuality exactly and Merriam-Webster Dictionary explains sexuality to be:

One of the reasons I chose the topic of sexuality is simply because it is an exciting topic and one that as a human we all explore. Whether or not there was freedom or some sort of hindrance with our exploration, that does not mean we should ever stop exploring our sexuality. This also means those who label themselves as Asexual, at some point in their exploration they were satisfied with their freedom to not be attracted to sexuality.

What Is Sexual Freedom

Woodhull Freedom Foundation explains sexual freedom quite thoroughly on their website here and states:

Sexual freedom is the emancipation of sexual expression from arbitrary shackles prescribed by tradition – and sometimes even by law. Expression often shunned and ruled against includes celibacy, non-marriage, open discussion of human sexuality in public forums, and community living.

Sexual freedom is the license to lawfully live with and love whom you want, when you want, and how you want without social, political, medical or cultural persecution.

Biological Effects Of Sexual Freedom

When thinking of freedom of sexuality it is also good to be aware of the consequences. On the National Center for Biotechnology Information website, they bring up some interesting statistics here:

In the United Kingdom the available figures exclude patients treated by general practitioners or patients in the armed forces. The incidence of STDs is rising. In 1979 the figure for the United Kingdom was about 500,000 new cases. The most common STD in England and Wales is non-specific urethritis or non-specific genital infection. The increase in gonorrhea has been less dramatic in England and Wales than it has been in other industrial and urbanized countries.

Between 1960 and 1979 the incidence of the disease doubled to 60,000 new cases a year. Recent research has shown another group of sexually transmissible infectious agents which are now more common than the older venereal infections. Viruses are responsible for reversal of this 2nd generation of STDs. Their manifestations range from local discomfort to chronic disability, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, and neonatal death.

There are many medical, social and economic factors which contribute to this increase in the incidence of STD and the recognition of the 2nd generation of sexual infections. Some of these are known, others unknown. The introduction of penicillin and other antibiotics has had a great effect on some STDs, notably syphilis. Pelvic inflammatory disease has been the most important cause of increases in female infertility and ectopic pregnancy. The new generation of STDs has serious and potentially dangerous effects on both expectant mothers and their infants.

Whether or not this is a scare tactic or something to just consider, it is information that is out there and at least something to ponder when considering freedom of sexuality.

Sacred Sexuality

After becoming more spiritually and physically aware and being introduced to sacred sexuality, a book I find most interesting is Bedroom Secrets by Tao Chi Kung. One of the best ways to explain what I learned is described as:

Sex is an important component of life for all of us. It gives us strength, vitality, health, desire, and pleasure. Sexuality is therefore much too precious to be used in the wrong way or even abused. This is why Mother Nature responds with a strict checks-and-balances system so that sexual misuse is punished with disease, weakness, loss of libido, and even serious mental damage.

By recognizing and understanding your own sexuality, you can predict your future and be your own "healer" or psychological adviser. If you openly confront the life stream of sexuality, life will move with you. Success and happiness will flow to you, which will ultimately promote your courage to take action. Failures will occur less frequently and lose their effects since energy will continuously flow to you.

If you choose sexuality for what it really is, namely the union of spiritual and physical love, then this love will change you so much that you will experience yourself as a new human being. Sexuality is the love between the body, mind, and soul -- and this love gives all of us the strength to do miracles, if we only are willing.

Today, I brought you Freedom Of Sexuality without getting too personal since I am an energy worker and work with Native American medicine. Balance is something we all learn, so it was more important for me to share some of this balance than personal feelings. Regardless of our sexual orientation, it is so important to remember to explore sexuality and have balance. If it is one thing I would encourage, would be to never stop enjoying freedom of sexuality yet be careful of excess.
