We were lucky enough to spend time in Mexico, had the chance to stroll along a sacbe, an ancient Mayan road. It is still level enough and sturdy enough it could probably handle light car traffic. No one has done one bit of maintenance on some of them for a thousand years. The highway near me has to be resurfaced every year, it is riddled with frost heave and potholes after one winter. Granted, the Mayans did not have winter to contend with but still... It seems like SOMEONE was building better roads long before the contractors of USAInc came along...
