in #freedom7 years ago (edited)

In this article I explore the confessions of an ex- Facebook employee, who has come out to speak against using the social media platform.

Welcome to the Master of Thought. I will look out for you now.

Ex-employees speak out

After recent revelations of former facebook employees, another ex-team member speak out against the social media giant. Chamath Palihapitiya joined facebook in the early days of 2007 and became the head of user-growth department. These days he feels "tremendous guilt" and admits that the Facebook team has created tools that "are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works".

It's not just Facebook

In his passionate speech, he points out the facebook isn't the only driving force. In fact, a wide variety of apps with social integration are based on "dopamine-driven feedback loops". Behind the seemingly harmless hearts, likes and thumbs-up are actually addictive trigger systems that feed on our psychological flaws and need for external validation and affirmation. He admits that he tries to use these platforms as little as possible and his children aren't even allowed "to use that shit".

Long list of Facebook staff - similar statements

Palihapitiya’s statement adds to a long list of developers and employees who have expressed similar ideas. Early investor Sean Parker and product manager Antonio Garcia-Martinez for instance, have come out to say that they now consciously object the platform due to it's nature that is built on exploiting human psychological vulnerabilities. Furthermore, as insiders, they confirm the public suspicion that Facebook is not clear about the staggering amount of influence they have over their users based on the data it collects on them.

You don't have to quit - limit your time consciously

There are many reasons why we use Facebook and similar platforms. Maybe we want to post and give out friends insights into our lives. Perhaps it is the easiest way to connect with relatives. You don't have to do a cold cut and completely delete your account: Rather, inform yourself about how facebook is collecting user data. Check your privacy settings and evaluate how much private and perhaps sensitive information you are willing to give out to this data-driven advertisement-entity. Be conscious about how much time you spend there and how it impacts your emotions and well-being.

Then take a step back and limit your online time. Just a little. Every step in the right direction matters.

I hate Facebook. It is probably the worst platform to build a social media audience from scratch. After several months I had about 50 followers but they were all family and friends. Facebook did jack except spy on me and try to sell me advertising.

I think some digital marketers like Jerry Banfield would disagree here, but that is because in order to succeed you have to be an aggressive advertiser. And I think neither of us really feels good about doing that.

Everyone should dump facebook and join steemit, but that's just my thoughts, simplez :)

They totally should. But I still got too many folks on facebook chat :/
