Innovation vs Stagnation - Cruelty-Free Government

Part of the reason that mobile phones, for example, have improved so much in the last 20 years is that companies have the freedom to experiment with new designs and technology, and consumers have the right to choose between them, giving companies a strong form of feedback about their desires.

Imagine if you had to buy your mobile phone from a certain company. Would they be as willing to experiment, knowing that you would buy the phone no matter what they did? That's exactly the situation that we have with government today.

Cruelty-Free Government is the idea that governments will be free to experiment, and you will be free to choose the ones you like best. If a government devises a new way to maintain peace which is cheaper and more efficient, you should be able to choose. Your government is supposed to serve you.

cool post @churdtzu, I used to live in Australia, now in South America, the last continent with freedoms, from what I see.
On Innovation, Gates calls for more R&D budgets - do you have a post/paper around this? I watch Korea and the car/tv/phone market share they are building ... it is impressive!

how bout just LESS government?

Have you studied the idea of panarchy much? Would you consider panarchy to be in essence what you're referring to when you say cruelty-free government? I'm just beginning to study it myself but that's kinda what it sounds like you're saying, the ability to choose your style of government.

I hadn't heard of it until just a few days ago when someone mentioned it the other day on one of these posts, but yes, it's the same thing. We came up with the phrase to try to market the ideas of liberty, a way to express the ideas in a way that is much more familiar to people than words like "anarchy" or "panarchy".

If you haven't seen this interview about the Seasteading Institute, I highly recommend it:

Cool, I'll check it out!
