Do freedivers have to black out to reach a record?

I've just been asked by a guy at the office of one has to black out on the race for a world record in freediving. I said no. I was trying to explain the gradual methodical training system. But it's still remains an enigma for the average Joe. How do you, guys, explain freediving to others?
