Free camping in Euboea, Greece

In this post I will describe one of the best weekends of my life when me and my friends decided to go for free camping in a Greek island.  

Well the trip didn’t start well. 

Me and my friends were supposed to meet at 11 am in Athens but as usual we ended up meeting at 1 am and starting our journey at 2 am, without knowing where we were going. After a long lasting debate and 3 hours of driving, we ended up at the northern end of Euboea, an island close to Attica, in a beach called Saint Merkurius. It was a remote sand beach ending to a giant rock with crystal blue sea water. The landscape was impressive as it reminded of something out of New Zealand. It was tropical and wild. 

First thing we did was to set our camp. We chose a place not very close to the giant rock in case a rock sliding happens but also not very far from the rock so that we are protected from the morning sun. After some failed attempts and a couple of selfies we managed to set our camps.

Now it was swimming time. The sea was very clean but also extremely cold, something that happens when you swim in the Aegean Sea.  

After that it was food time. So we started a fire and cooked the meat we brought with us. 

Fun time! 

After eating, drinking and extinguishing the fire we went to sleep. 

A friendly advice here. 

If you ever go for free camping make yourself a favor and bring a mattress with you. It helps a lot to sleep well and to avoid having a pain in the back.  

The next day was pretty simple. We swam and relaxed until the afternoon. At some point, we packed our things up and head back to Athens as all of us were working on Monday. 

In our way back we stopped in a very nice village where we had lunch. The village was called “Blue Waters” and it had by far the best souvlaki I have ever eaten before.  

If you ever want to come for vacations in Greece I suggest you to visit this beach. I believe it is one of the best places to relax, it has an amazing landscape, it is a low budget destination and it is also very close to Athens if you can get there by car. Just don’t forget to bring your own food with you and please keep the beach clean.
