During the first inauguration of the United States in 1789, the government, Senate, House, and President George Washington gathered at St. Paul's Chapel for the Inaugural Prayer and Divine Service (right after the First Inauguration). In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, only St Paul's Chapel survived. It served as a refuge to first responders during the recovery process. Hence, it was named "The Little Chapel That Stood".
