Until the early 19th century the city of Tarutung was once crowded by people around for trade transactions coming from areas Silindung, Humbang, Samosir, Toba, Dairi, including from the south such as Pahae, Sipirok and around Sibolga and Barus.
In the beginning this traditional trading transaction was conducted in a village location centered under a shady banyan tree called Onan Sitaru (market barter) in the present Saitnihuta village. It is said that the banyan tree is still growing and aged around 200 years now
In line with the increase of time the hustle of the people revive the spirit of community life to do its activities. But at the same time the Batak Land began to be controlled by the Dutch Army, especially after the surrender of West Sumatra by British control to the Dutch colonial government. So the Dutch also set foot in Silindung
The area became official as a place to trade and the Dutch planted a sign that is a durian tree Batak people call it tarutung in 1877. After about 60 years old then re-opened the traditional market activities under the tarutung tree which later developed into a city called Tarutung City as the capital of North Tapanuli Regency.
