Australian Native Cherry
This is an interesting fruit. It's the fruit of the Native Cherry (Exocarpus cupressiformis) in Australia.
It's an interesting tree, a hemiparasite that gets many of its nutrients from the host whose roots it attaches itself to. Native Cherries aren't full parasites as they create many of their necessities themselves and only take some nutrients from the host tree.
The fruit has the seed on the outside, that's where the genus name comes from - 'exo' means 'outside' 'carpos' means 'seed'.
They're a little sweet when picked slightly redder than the one in the pic. I was a little early, I guess.
This is #originalwork. The pics or videos were taken by yours truly.

Thank you
What an interesting tree, I had never heard of it before. Thank you for introducing me to it @ligayagardener :)
There's another, close relative that lives on our coasts. Exocarpus syrticola. It too has interesting, edible fruit
