Crown Tipped Coral Mushrrom

Coral mushroom has a very distinct coral shape that makes it almost impossible to mistake for any other mushroom. However there are multiple varieties of Coral Mushroom. Many can give you a great deal of gastric distress, so you will want to be sure you are eating the right kind.

Crown Tipped Coral Mushroom grows on dead or dying hardwoods. I do believe it is the only Coral Mushroom that grows directly on rotting wood. If your Coral Mushroom is growing out of the soil, don't eat it. The other defining trait of Crown Tipped Coral is that the very end of each offshoot has a small ring of three to six spikes around the tip that look like a small crown.

You need quite a lot of coral mushroom if you intend to fry it, as it wilts down to practically nothing when cooked. I have heard that it is best used in sauces and soups to impart flavor.

A word of warning: Even though Crown Tipped Coral is a safe edible mushroom, not every mushroom agrees with everyone, and crown tipped coral gives me an upset stomach. Your mileage may vary.

Video Guide:

Never consume any wild edible without a strong positive ID. Failure to properly ID can lead to serious poisoning.

It looks like you found it in pretty good shape, too. Too bad it doesn't agree with you! That's a good reason for not eating a big bowl of any mushroom new to you!

Yeah, I had a long night sitting on the toilet after the first time I ate a big mess of crown tipped coral. Some times a certain wild edible just doesn't agree with you even it loads of other people eat it and are fine.

So true. People are so worried about that for wild foods, but any of us can have problems with commonly eaten food, too. I've met people who have bad reactions to things I think of as delicious, like peaches, watermelon, raspberries, or grapes. And that's without considering the usual foods that people have trouble with like seafood, nuts, dairy or chocolate.

Your coral, Clavicorona pyxidata, is so much more delicate than many of Ramaria coral mushrooms! Very distinctive!

Yeah, the varieties that tend to grow in the soil are much more....I dunno...chunky and stubby than this variety.
