Norway and the Netherlands both mess it up!
We are busy with the final stage of the World Cup qualifiers in Europe, and in the group consisting of Gibraltar, Turkey, Norway, Latvia, the Netherlands, and Montenegro, everything seemed to tell us that the Netherlands would be the winner of the group, especially when Norway messed it up and played a 0-0 against Latvia at home in Norway yesterday. Based on this, Netherlands would secure their place in the World Cup next year with a victory against Montenegro. And five minutes before the end up the match, they actually had a 2-0 lead against Montenegro. The World Cup was in their hands.
But, then Montenegro woke up, and suddenly they scored twice and everything changed. The final group match in this group will be played between Norway and the Netherlands on Tuesday, and even though everyone expects the Netherlands to win, Norway can actually secure their place in the World Cup if they will win the match. That would suddenly make the draw for the Netherlands against Montenegro really bitter.
However, there are suddenly several options available. The Netherlands will for sure win the group if they win or play a draw against Norway, because even though Turkey might win their last match and get 21 points, they will have scored fewer goals. Norway messed it up against Latvia, because they are behind Turkey when it comes to scored goals, meaning that even if they win against the Netherlands, they might end up second in their group behind Turkey.
No matter what, there are suddenly three teams that can win this group with only one match left to play, making this a real thriller before the final round.
Which teams will you cheer for? I really expect the Netherlands to win the group with a quite easy win against Norway, but with a lot of pressure on their shoulders, who knows what will happen?
