Easier for Bayer to keep James: they are already using him and Real Madrid don't need a player who had some difficulties in Madrid last time.
Real Madrid is shouting for a striker but is difficult for them get a player from a rival, more if they have no guarantees on that position. Champions league can be a potential window to know the final decision.
Anyway, Lewandowsky is not for everybody and Real Madrid is one of those fews who can pay it
