What in the world is Kuaci?

Kuaci. It is the name of sunflower seeds or black melon seeds or pumpkin seeds, a favourite snack among Asians and is available all year round. But during the Lunar New Year, it is a must have. Honestly I don’t know why it is a must have but it is there EVERY Lunar New Year.

This snack is very addictive. Again I don’t know why. Maybe because it feels like a reward after the challenge of popping it open between your teeth. Those tiny suckers can drive you mad when you can’t open them and yet they give you immense satisfaction when you get to open them between your teeth perfectly. Maybe because it is so small you feel that you need to eat a million of it to make it worth your while. Maybe because if you get the salty ones, it just makes you numb on the mouth after eating a gazillion of it and you just don’t care anymore. Whatever the reason, everyone gets suck into the rabbit hole. It is unbelievable hard to stop eating it once you start. Maybe it is just me that gets addicted to it.

So why am I talking about kuaci now? It’s because I am eating them now and I can’t bloody stop.
