Sticky Treat
Here in our country we love rice cakes and in our small city there is a store which is well know when it comes to rice cakes. The store has been very popular since I was very young and we went there this morning to share with you a local delicacy. This is their most popular product called Samala rice cake but well known as........................
Malagkit (Sticky)
I recall when I was a kid every time we went out to visit some relatives outside the city. My parents always pulled up to this store to buy rice cakes specifically the Malagkit before we go on our journey. This product has been quite popular and if people knew you lived in our city they often ask about the rice cake.
Early in the morning they already have boxes piled up and ready for the rice cakes as they sell a lot everyday. Not only rice cakes they also offer other delicacies and other tasty snacks.
These are called Pastillas which are milk candies mixed with sugar. I am not sure what kind of milk they use but I have learned that the original recipe uses milk from a water buffalo. The flavors they have are cheese, purple yam, jack fruit, pandan , mango, melon, sweet corn and cookies and cream.
They have a lot of various snacks made from bread and some we could say it is like Philippine cookies.
These colorfully wrapped treats are called polvoron flour mixed with milk and sugar. Simple ingredients but it is quite a treat. I recalled when I was sent abroad by the company for training we brought some of these to give away to our bosses there. Surprisingly they loved it and they said it was like some sort of cookie but it is not as it crumbles easily when you eat it.
More local delicacies like banana chips, tarts, peanut bars and the others I couldn't recognize. I grew up here but I still have not tasted everything.
Here are some fruit juices and a special vinegar which if you could see is loaded with spices and red chili. You know what to expect once you try this vinegar as a dip.
Now this is a treat Crispy Mushroom Chips. If you are health conscious and want to lay off some of the cholesterol if you love eating pork rinds. This is really good and I have tried it a couple of times already.
We went home and got what we came for the Malagkit. The old packaging use to be a white plastic wrapper with the original name Samala which is their family name. Changes in business names here are common after years of operation. They said it is one way to lower the taxes paid. I am just not sure about the reason for their change of name possibly a marketing strategy as they have other branches operating in other locations.
Once you open the box a sweet smell will be inviting you to take a bite. The ingredients includes coconut milk , sugar and rice. The the rice used is specifically called glutinous rice which is the same type of rice used on other rice cakes.
Soft, sweet and a bit chewy the Malagkit is a very tasty desert and do not forget there is coconut milk which adds flavor. Also just to add coconut milk in other dishes makes wonders and gives and island flavor to your food.
If you want to see what I mean feel free to check a dish that my wife cooked.
Pork in shrimp paste with coconut milk
Well I hope you enjoyed this tasty treat that I shared today. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think.
Cheers Steemian.
Such appetizing photos. I would love to try, but I'm far away)
Thanks. Where are you from?
@watersnake101 Such delicious treats and beautiful photos. The colors of the treats inside match the pastel colors of the store front :) I love that you still go here to buy rice cakes as you did with your parents when you were a child.
Yes a very sentimental place. They have come a long way they even have a small restaurant now.
@watersnake101 I love hearing that. Too many places we loved as a child are no longer around, so it's great to hear that they expanded :)
Hmm would like to try this! It makes me hungry 🤗
Ah you would love this. If you ever visit the Philippines you would probably gain some weight lol.
