Don't Hate Me Because I Had This Tres Leches Cake Tonight!

Tres Leches cake is what we call this delightful cake in Texas:

Apparently, people who actually speak Spanish call it pastel de tres leches or torta de tres leches. This basically means "Three Milks Bread." These are the three kinds of milk in tres leche:

• Evaporated milk
• Sweetened condensed milk
• Heavy cream

I mean, who wouldn't like their sponge or or butter cake soaked in all of the best kinds of milk? Anyway, it was a family member's birthday today, and I picked that up at a local grocery store bakery for an irresistibly affordable price. This particular cake actually has a forth kind of milk - a generous coating of whipped cream. Yum, it was perfect.

Of course, it also had strawberries, so let's call it a salad!

Where Does Tres Leche Cake Come From?

Even though this cake is popular in Mexico, Texas, and Central and South America, historians believe the idea actually evolved in Medieval Europe. That's because the British rum cake and trifle AND tiramisu use use a similar method for creating a very moist cake that still does not taste soggy. You can actually find variations of a three-milk kind of cake on many different continents, but its believed they were inspired by the New World idea and not the Old World one.
