RE: The Scoop on Yogurt, Part 2 (Why we ONLY eat homemade yogurt)
So true. That’s why I only purchase Stonyfield Whole Milk Plain Yogurt. None of those ingredients and organic. I would like to start making my own yogurt, but I need to find a good milk source locally. Otherwise I’m basically just purchasing the same milk Stonyfield is using and end up with pretty much the same product.
It's such an adventure finding a local milk source! We've made quite a few friends through our hunt. Have you heard of the Real Milk Finder? Though many of the listings are old, we were still able to find a local Friend with Cows by calling through it (there's always a guy who knows a guy). Craigslist often also has a listing for folks selling real milk. Word-of-mouth seems to be the most dependable source out here, though, and I really like that.
Yeah, we were traveling an hour every week to collect milk from our share a few years back. They had the most amazing milk and cheese. But the cost, time, and fossil fuel used to pick up a few gallons of milk didn't make any sense. We found a guy more locally, but we weren't as satisfied with his operation. We don't consume milk if it's not fermented, only cheese and yogurt. Once we feel we have the time and resources to invest in yogurt and cheesemaking we'll be searching for a source. Thanks for the advice!
