FOOD CULTURE IN IZMIR, TURKEY, WHAT DO WE HAVE FOR BREAKFAST? OF COURSE, NOT DONER KEBAB! :))
Turkey is a special country which has roots from Europe and Asia. We have many similarities with Greek , Georgian, Iranian and Syrian cultures. Country is located in a big area which is covered by three seas, Black, Aegean and Mediterranean seas. As I mentioned in my previous post, I am from İzmir which is the third biggest city in Turkey, I live in a city which is by Aegean sea. You can check my post about İzmir here.
In this post, I will introduce what we have for breakfast. We have some special stuff that were born in this part of Turkey. Let's start with gevrek ( crisp) or simit ( You can't find anybody from İzmir that is calling it as simit. Even though other parts of Turkey call it simit, we call it as gevrek!) it is thought that people from İzmir got this name ( Gevrek) from Balkans , so that explains the difference.
( Gevrek, Simit, Crisp with some turkish tea!)
It is basically made of dough, flour, water, yeast and of course sesameseeds. It is usually consumed with turkish tea, cheese or ayran which is a drink made of yoghurt and water. I am a big fan of Gevrek as you can see in photo :))
( Boyoz is a pastry that is made only in İzmir, İzmir is famous for this special food)
Gevrek is not the only thing we consume. Boyoz is another pastry that we love in İzmir so much! İzmir is only city where Boyoz is produced, so my city is quite famous for its boyoz. The main ingredients of boyoz are flour and sunflower oil. Boyoz can be made with spinach and cheese inside but it is also preferred without any extra thing inside it. We usually consume it with eggs, turkish tea and cheese. Boyoz with eggs is the best combination ever. Look how lovely they seem in the following picture :))
( Boyoz with eggs and turkish tea is really nice combination, We usually prefer this combination)
Kumru is another lovely thing which is made in İzmir. Kumru bread is made of a special dough which is not so salty. Kumru means collared dove that is a bird. We give that name to it as the shape of kumru bread is similar to collared dove bird. Kumru is consisted of kumru bread, cheese, tomatoes and green pepper with some salt.
( Kumru can be a nice take-away food to start your day, I usually prefer it for breakfast at work)
There is another type of Kumru with sausage, tomatoes, cheese, pickles and some other stuff, but we don't prefer that for breakfast.
You can buy these baked-pasteries in bakeries or food kioks. Food kioks are quite common in İzmir and Turkey. There is one example down there. They are really useful, I can grab something every morning before I start to work.
( turkish people usually prefer this kind of bread, we call it " ekmek " )
( this is another kind of bread that people consume in Ramadan period which lasts for 1 month in Muslim community, it is called as " pide " )
( some sweet and salty baked-goods, they are really good with black turkish tea)
( and finally..a masterpiece, BAKLAVA )
So, ladies and gentlemen. If you have liked my post, you are kindly invited to my lovely city. If you ever plan to come here, don't forget to write me. You might have a free guided tour from a local guy! :))
