Gokyuzu's Turkish Delights in London

As a big fan of Turkish food, I had been craving the Byzantium delights of the Bosphorous after a recent trip to Istanbul. After perusing the streets of London in search of authentic Pide and Lahmacun, I discovered the bustling Green lanes in Haringay, known by locals as ‘little Turkey’, and decided to visit the infamous Gokyuzu.

First opened in 1999, Gokyuzu is a family run business that operates at three sites across North and East London with a fourth opening soon. Gokyuzu is situated on Grand Parade, roughly equidistant from Turnpike lane and Manor House underground stations (‘tube’). Following a brisk walk we were greeted with a long queue extending to the door but were seated within 15 minutes thanks to the diligent and efficient handling of the guests by the staff.

The menu provides a wealth of Turkish delights which we pondered over a generous helping of authentic bread and mezze.

After some discussion, we decided upon the mixed kebab for £20 and Lahmacun (Turkish pizza) for £4. However the menu offers a variety of choice and platters for parties of varying sizes, with neighbouring tables ordering mouthwatering mountains of meat.

There are also options for non-meat lovers such as vegetarian pide and a range of seafood dishes.

We were swiftly served our piping hot food, which provided ample helpings for two. The mixed kebab consisted of lamb shish, chicken shish, adana kebab, 2 x ribs, 2 x chicken wings.

The lamb was delightfully succulent with a crisp chargrilled outer layer. We were struck by the meat’s excellent combination of moisture and flavour. Although the chicken was a little overcooked for our liking. The lahmacun brought backed memories of Kadikoy in Istanbul with a thin crispy base topped with succulent mince and a light dusting of herbs.

As fans of Turkish desserts we were hoping to satisfy our sweet tooth with some baklava or a little kuneife (pastry filled with cheese topped with syrup) but we were full of the ample helpings of meat which we look forward to sampling on our next visit.

The popularity of the restaurant and the incredibly friendly and efficient service provides a lively atmosphere with a rapid turnover of guests. The food was excellent, but those looking for a quiet intimate evening, might find the hustle and bustle excessive. Gokyuzu provided us with an authentically Turkish evening complete with generous helpings of meat in a dynamic environment.
