In Germany, kids like to share sourdough-starters called "Herman". Herman needs to be fed regularly, and if you do it well, is gonna feed you. Then you can share Herman with your friends (together with instructions). However, it does happen quite frequently that Herman dies in someone's care. But people tend to take it with a smile: there's plenty of other Hermans going around.
