Catch, Cook, Eat...
I have never been a hunter or a fisherman, but I have to say, there is something entirely satisfying about eating what you have caught and cooked yourself. Only two days ago, I became one of those hunter/fishermen that I didn’t really identify with, and found that I am glad to say that I now do identify with them.
I’ve watched my father-in-law crabbing from Henley jetty numerous times - even helped him pull in the nets from time to time, but until you have gone into the ocean and looked these spiders of the sea eye to beady eye, you have not really been crabbing!!
When you’re chest deep in the ocean at 10:30pm, you would think that sharks would be the only thing on your mind, but armed with only a LED flashlight on a telescopic rod and a net, fighting off Jaws isn’t really an option, so you tend to focus on your prey, and surprisingly, there is a great deal of those little suckers under the waves at this time of year.

Having never done this before, there was a slight learning curve, but after a couple of attempts, it turns out that netting a crab was is not too difficult - making sure that it was of legal size was the biggest concern. It is also important to make sure that if they are female, that they have no eggs.
Bag limit per person is a whopping 20 crabs, although, we never actually got anywhere near this. However, 16 was more than enough to feed my family and have a few left over for another day.
With one more week before school goes back, I’m hoping to give this another crack next week. It was actually quite relaxing and, as mentioned earlier, there is something quite unique about eating the prey you have caught with your own hands!!

Chili Crab Yum!
Will have to look into that one. Just boring old boiling water and salt this time around!
When I was living up in QLD there were many feasts of gigantic mud crabs :)
Kid looks like he's gonna devour some delicious crustaceans and butter tonight!
Funny enough, he wasn’t too fond of eating them. Just enjoyed playing with the cooked ones!
Going crabbing and coming home with a great haul is so good. Fishing for hours with little to no reward, well, not so much my idea of fun!
I have to agree. Fishing is pretty boring when there’s no return. Crabbing on the other hand is quite excellent.
and at the end, you end up with crabs...
um, the good kind of them that are tasty and all
Definitely the good kind. And they are tasty!! Just needed to learn how to properly cook them!
practice is a good teacher. As are youtube recipes
I love a feed at your place.
Surely its somebody's birthday or anniversary soon.
I’m hoping to go again soon if you’re interested. Waiting to see weather conditions next week.
Never tried it, certainly not at night.
Sign me up, we'll talk :)
Turns out night is when they’re there... just waiting to be caught! There were times when there were 6 or 7 in the torch beam. Pick the males as they have the best claws and strike.
I’ll get in touch soon. The hot weather coming up next week should be real handy.
@danclarke likes to get them like that. Haven't tried at night though.
They hold their ground and menace you; Or stay still and present their handles, depends who's telling the story.
They like to challenge by pointing their claws at you, but never much more than that... quite a few turned tail and ran. Just dropped the net over them, shook it slightly to make them take off, when they do, they get tangled and then lift them out of the water.
