Exotic Fruits In Indonesia

As a tropical country, Indonesia has many tropical fruits that some of them only exist in Indonesia. For many people especially for people who never lived in tropical country, these fruits might look strange or even extreme. However, with the fact that 70% Indonesia landscape is covered with forest, it is something common that Indonesia has so many option of trees that produce many exotic fruits to enjoy.

These are fruits that common to enjoy in Indonesia but it might be look exotic for people who lived in non-tropical country :

Rambutan
The skin of this fruit is covered with "hair". You should peel its hairy skin and eat only the soft fruit meat inside. Do not eat the seed inside the soft fruit meat since it's hard and uneatable. It taste fresh, sweet, and juicy. More or less the taste is similar with lychee.

Durian
Usually people called it as "King of Fruit" because of its strong smell. It has thorn cover rind. In order to eat durian, crack its thorn cover rind and eat the soft fruit meat inside. The fruit meat has several colors such as yellow and white depending on the variety of the durian itself. Do not eat the seed inside its fruit meat, its uneatable. In Indonesia, its common to eat durian with uncovered plastic hand since they had special tips to reduce its smell after eating durian. Tips to reduce strong smell in your hand after eating durian : put a little bit water on the soft side of durian skin and gently rub your hand with that water and also with soft durian skin.

Duku
Duku has several names such as Dokong in Malay or Longkong in English. This fruit has soft skin, easy to peel. It has soft fruit meat inside and seed. It taste sweet in the fruit meat but a little bit sour in the fruit meat near the seed.

Nangka
Nangka usually called as jackfruit in English. Nangka fruit meat can be processed as chips. Nangka has soft, yellow fruit meat and seed inside. Nangka fruit meat taste fresh, sweet and sour. The seed can be eaten as additional carbohydrate, boiled seed of nangka is called "beton". Just boiled the skin until its not hard, peel the brown skin and eat the soft white seed. The boiled seed taste similar to potato.

Belimbing
Belimbing or star fruit in English is very common fruit in Indonesia. It taste juicy, sweet and sour. Belimbing is one of the fruit that usually use in rujak (Indonesia fruit salad with peanut sauce). In order to eat belimbing no need to peel its skin, its whole body is eatable.
