patisserie Varsos near Athens - awesome food and great tradition
Hi Steemians! If you happen to come to Greece and if you are near Athens, here is a great insider tip for you. North of Athens, in the suburb of Kifissia there is the patisserie Varsos which is definitely worth a detour If you like tasty and high-quality food. It is not just any shop but so-to-say the grandmother of this category of food store. It offers a wide range of delicious stuff like sweet milk bread, brioches, yoghurts, fruit pies, strudels, cheese cakes, cookies and of course local Greek sweets like Baklava.
You can buy it on the go or even better eat it immediately at the very nice café. All has a nostalgic charm of the mid 20th century. It is very modern and clean but has kept a comfortable old-fashioned look-and-feel.
Please check out also the history of the shop at its homepage which is interesting in itself. Vassilios H. Varsos founded a milk products shop back in 1892 when he was 16 years old only. Since then it was growing and diversifying but it never became that big that it had affiliates or Franchises like other successful shops. Tradition has a high value for the family and you see it immediately when you enter the store.
Whenever I am in Greece I drop over there for coffee and “Tsureki” or “Galactobureko”. I hope that the "Varsos" will survive also the next 125 years!
