Good morning! Take a couple minutes to sit, read, and eat

Wow!! First of all thank you all for a great response on my first post! I am beyond excited to be starting this journey with all of you, and I’m so happy to be seeing such an interactive community.

Here we go!

People always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that you shouldn’t skip it. I admit, however, that I am one of the many who would rather get an extra five minutes of sleep and then run out the door, leaving me no time to eat.

Scientifically speaking, breakfast is important. There are numerous studies which agree that eating in the morning can help with blood sugar levels as well as other metabolic changes. Some debate about whether or not effects of breakfast on cognition, observed in short-term studies, translate into long-term benefits (such as the study done by Ernesto Pollitt and Rebecca Mathews, Breakfast and cognition: an integrative summary, 1998), meaning that maybe if I allowed myself enough time to eat in the morning, I would be that much smarter.. Well….a girl can dream, right?

Breakfast with my lovely roommates! We had delicious banana pancakes and a side of raspberries drizzled with a touch of honey. To wash it all down we indulged in a frosty mango smoothie. Safe to say I wish I could eat this every morning.

Anyways, aside from the more scientific aspect (I have a bachelors in biology and a masters in health, so I can’t always restrain my nerdier side!) I know that personally I feel much better throughout the day if I have eaten something, even if it’s something as easy as a piece of fruit. I find myself less grumpy, or “hangry” before lunch, and overall more alert. On top of that, I find that if I give myself time to sit down and eat, my morning seems to be less rushed. Instead of grabbing all my belongings and sprinting out the door, I find myself relaxing a bit while also enjoying some tasty food.

Some of favorite breakfasts include :

  • Yogurt with muesli and bananas
  • Overnight oats with berries
  • Fruit smoothies (sometimes I add some greens too)
  • Scrambled eggs and toast
  • Croissants or ‘pain au chocolate’
