It's notorious how important pork is in some Asian countries, could it be related to the lack of space, or cows being too expensive to feed?

well, in china, lamb or certain seafood would be most expensive, next would be beef and pork, then comes fish, lastly chicken.
i think it really depends on the supply of each country. aussies would enjoy a good steak anytime
