Japan is one of the most fascinating countries in the world - apart from their interesting culture, they also have one of my favorite cuisines.

It offers such a wide variety of dishes - meat, seafood, noodels, soup, rice, and of course Sushi!
Although sushi is probably the first thing most people think of when they hear japanese food, their cuisine actually has a lot more to offer than just sushi.

During my time in Thailand, I had the opportunity to visit a great authentic Japanese Restaurant: Fuji!

We started off with some classic vegetable maki rolls and delicious drinks (Left to right: ice tea - coconut shake - matcha shake - strawberry shake - mango shake)

We chose a very traditionally Japanese starter: Gyoza!

Gyoza are basically pan-fried pockets of dough, stuffed with a meat and vegetable filling.

The minced pork inside was seasoned perfectly and still juicy, and the outside of the Gyoza was just slightly crispy how it should be!
I almost feel like you could eat Gyoza at any time - and whenever I see it on the menu, it's just too tempting not to get it!

Not really Japanese, but nevertheless delicious: Avocado Salad!

The special thing about this salad was not only the beautifully sliced avocado on top - but actually, the dressing!
The dressing seemed to be some kind of homemade mix between sesame oil and Japanese mayonnaise.

Surprisingly, the combination between sesame and avocado was spectacular and really made this salad stand out.

The best fried Japanese food: TEMPURA!

Tempura is a special kind of batter that coats seafood or vegetables and then gets deep-fried.
The batter forms a super fluffy, crispy crust - making everything inside so much more delicious!

We went for both the shrimp- as well as the vegetable tempura, both of which were absolutely delicious.

Just as good: deep-fried squid!

These squid tentacles were also deep-fried to perfection.

Squid can easily get a rubber-like texture when cooked for too long, but these were perfectly flavourful from the inside and crispy from the outside.
Similar to the spanish "calamares a la romana", this snack is a must-try for anyone who loves squid!

Very traditional Octopus-stuffed dough balls: TAKOYAKI!

Sticking with the seafood theme, Takoyaki is a signature dish in japanese culture.

It's basically little dough balls, filled with minced octopus and vegetables, then deep fried, and topped with takoyaki sauce (similar to worcestersauce).

It's a very popular streetfood in Japan, so I just had to try it!

Last but not least: Wagyu Katsu!

Tonkatsu, breaded pork cutlet, is basically the Japanese version of a "Wiener Schnitzel".
It comes with a curry sauce and is already incredibly delicious - but this wasn't just any meat.
This was Wagyu beef, a special kind of beef similar to the well-known Kobe beef.
It's a luxurious cut of meat with intense marbling, making it extremely tender and flavourful.

This was my first time trying authentic Wagyu beef, and I have to say - it was really incredible.
Once you've taken the first bite of the meat, it's like it just melts in your mouth.

It's incomparable to any other type of meat, and the breading and curry sauce just made it even better!

This was definitely my favorite dish of the whole dinner!

Now, the dessert!

Although we were all very stuffed already, of course we couldn't leave without satisfying our sweet tooth.
We chose a Matcha Cake dessert - basically matcha sponge cake, with a layer of red bean paste in the middle, topped with matcha frosting.
The balance of flavours was just right, not too sweet but also not too much matcha to make it bitter.

It was the perfect ending to such a delicious dinner!
