Mr. Gourmet: Culinary Adventures in Milan, Italy! 🇮🇹

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Recently, I went to visit Milan - of course I also had to try some great Italian food!

Italy is a wonderful destination for every foodie - pizza, pasta, meat, fish, desserts, ice cream, chocolate, coffee ... everything seems to be especially delicious in Italy.

When we first arrived in Milan, we wandered around the town center and explored the famous dome.

Right next to the dome is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - world's oldest shopping center and a beautiful location in itself. The building is decorated with countless works of art - paintings, mosaic on the floor, plastering on the ceiling and more!
As me and @thehipsterguru were walking through the Galleria, we saw an Italian Restaurant right in front of us - inside the Galleria.

Of course, we knew right away that this would be a very touristy spot since it's in the middle of the main sightseeing attractions.

But still, this also meant that the restaurant food would have to be good enough in order to afford the expensive rent - so we decided to go for it!

First Italian dish of the trip: Of course, PIZZA!

You can never go wrong with ordering Pizza in Italy.
They know how to cook their Pizzas to perfection, with a perfectly thin dough and baked in a stone oven!
I went for Salami Pizza (a classic!) with black olives.
The Pizza was thin and crispy, the tomato sauce was rich in flavor, the Salami slightly spicy and the olives juicy and salty - all in all, it was like an Italian celebration in your mouth!

Since Milan is so famous for its "Risotto Milanese", we definitely had to try that as well.

We chose the one with fresh porcini mushrooms - a classic combination.
The rice itself was so rich and creamy, and the risotto sauce was packed with flavour from the parmesan.
The mushrooms themselves were very fresh, juicy, and flavourful - probably one of the best Risotto's I've ever had!

The next morning, we were walking around trying to find a place for breakfast.

Milan is not only full of great restaurants, but there are also countless tiny bakeries and cafés.
Every little spot seemed to be baking their own pastry, and of course serving some great coffee.
We decided to go for a little white corner Café that had a lovely terrace in the sun and looked very homely from the inside.
We were only in the mood for a light breakfast so we went for some fresh fruit & yogurt, and homemade buttermilk pancakes.
The fruits were fresh and juicy just like they should be, and the pancakes were fluffy and soft - absolutely delicious!
Although this might not be a specifically Italian kind of breakfast, this was only our appetizer to move on to some more sweet dishes in the afternoon...

Lastly: a variety of desserts!

Pizza and Pasta - those are the main dishes you think about when hearing the words "Italian cuisine". But the Italians also have some amazing desserts as well.
Not only their world-famous ice cream and chocolate - also their pastry and baked goods are cooked to perfection.

Look at the variety of different cakes, tartes, pastry, chocolate... it seems impossible to choose!

Since we couldn't just decide on one each, we decided to share 3 desserts in total - below is a collection of the different mouthwatering things we've tried:

Tartufo with white chocolate, coconut cream, coconut filling, fresh fruit, whipping cream, berry puree, coconut flakes and a dark chocolate twirl!

This dessert is as much a mouthful to eat as it is a mouthful to say.
When you take the first scoop out of the tartufo it's a soft panna cotta texture, flavored with white chocolate, and a refreshing coconut cream filling in the middle.
These sweet and rich flavours go perfectly well with the slightly sour and sharp berries!

And the whole thing is then topped with shredded coconut and some crunchy dark chocolate - all in all, it was an amazing combination!

Next up: a fruit tarte, fresh pastry base filled with vanilla cream, topped with fruits and whipped cream.

This tarte was the perfectly fresh, light, summer dessert.
The pastry base was freshly baked and was lovely and crunchy, in contrast to the rich and soft vanilla filling inside.
These flavours are then paired with the fresh, sweet and sour berries on top - it might sound like a simple dessert but you need to get the balance of flavours just right !

And lastly: fruity Cheesecake!

I love Cheesecake in all different variations.
This one was simply called "Berry cheesecake". I was intrigued by that combination and decided to try it - and I wasn't disappointed!
The freshly baked crust was enhanced with a thin layer of raspberry jam, then topped with the cheesecake filling, and some berry puree.

The combination between sweet and crispy crust, rich cheesecake, and fruity berry puree was an absolute delight!

We didn't have a lot of time in Milan since this was only a business trip, but still we got to enjoy some amazing food.

Mr. Gourmet's culinary adventure in Milan was an absolute success - and soon, we will be exploring the cuisine of another country in our next trip! Stay tuned!
