Atemoya (Annona squamosa x Annona cherimola) in 1908, P.J. Wester, a horticulturist at the USDA's Subtropical Laboratory in Miami successfully crossed the sugar apple (Annona squamosa) with cherimoya (Annona cherimola) and the Atemoya was born. Subsequently it was naturally crossed in Venezuela and Israel in the 1920's. Today the fruit is most popular in Taiwan where it is known as “pineapple sugar apple”(鳳梨釋迦). Health benefits of Atemoya; being high in folic acid it aids in weight loss, said to lower blood pressure levels, increases the body’s energy levels, reduces the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. I've never heard of this fruit before, but I love cherimoya. Do you know if it's available all year or is it only seasonal?
This fruit is new to me as well, haven't found it anywhere yet, my guess is that it is seasonal as is the cherimoya. Let me know if you find it and what you think of it, thanks for the upvote.
