Dine Out: Teesside Parmesan (Parmo)
Teesside is a region in North East England, around Middlesbrough and the surrounding area. Probably different from any other 'Parmo' you may have seen - the Teesside Parmo has been likened to a schnitzel, only this one is chicken in breadcrumbs topped with a white béchamel sauce and grated melted cheese. It is now the number one takeaway food in the region, popular after a boozy night out. It is typically served with chips, salad and a thick creamy garlic sauce.
History:
The Parmo is said to have been created by Nicos Harris, a chef with the American army in World War II. He was wounded in France, but was brought to the United Kingdom to be treated in a British hospital. Eventually, he moved to Middlesbrough and opened a restaurant on Linthorpe Road, where he created the Parmo at The American Grill in 1958.
In 2009 a popular supermarket chain started selling a version you can put it the oven and they claimed they were selling 6,000 chicken Parmo's a week, making them, at the time, the shop's fastest selling line.
In takeaways it is popular to get added extra toppings on top of the already belly busting Parmo, these include:
Hot Shot (pepperoni, jalapeno peppers, onion, garlic butter and chilli)
Meat Feast (pepperoni, chicken and ham)
Hawaiian (ham and pineapple)
Al Fungi (garlic butter, and mushrooms)

In 2007, North Yorkshire Trading Standards conducted a survey of 25 fast food dishes. A large Parmo with chips and salad they tested contained about 2600 calories and 150g of fat.

Omg how I miss the Parmo ordering ceremony on a friday night, which arrived in a huge pizza box and I could never finish it in one sitting, probably one of the nicest things I have ever eaten, now I am wondering if I can make it over here???
