Simple Urban Food Production Idea For Small Places - Hydroponic Tower Gardens

in #food7 years ago

As noted in my intro I have a lot of info that can be shared. This one and the next few are just some simple ideas you can experiment with based on what suites you best - - More to follow :)

Learning how to grow food in an urban environment (apartment, city, etc) is perhaps the ultimate survival skill for those who prefer the downtown lifestyle or who can't afford to move further out. Either way, you have a lot more options than you think, because empty lots, rooftops, abandoned buildings, barren walls, curbs, and patios all are viable opportunities.

Just a simple yet extremely powerful example of this is a very unique design called a Vertical Hydroponic Tower Garden. This can be implemented indoors or outside, and can be adapted to the size and space you have available.

It will allow you to grow 10x the normal amount of plants without dirt (so you can keep that nice apartment of yours clean).

Here is an example of what a finished Vertical Hydroponics Tower Gardens looks like after its been running for a little bit:

And here's a real simple guide on how to build it , with directions and how to take care of it.

It costs about $200 to build, mainly from the cost of the reservoir and the submersible pump (which you may have a better solution for but this is what I used). By using a submersible pump in a small reservoir, it will circulate the water and trickle feed the plants continuously. So it lets this system pretty much run itself with you only occasionally adding water/nutrients and harvesting when you want.

It is one of the quickest ways to try your hand at Urban Food Production.
